How to Make a Chord Stab in Serum (Sound Design Tutorial)

Sound Design

What’s up guys! My name is LAR and today we’re going to take a look at a synth stab in Serum - so let’s have a little look at what I’m working on. It’s a very nice, clean sound - very useful to use as a lead or something like that. The MIDI we’re using here is taken from a pack from Ben Bohmer. As for the sound it’s taken from the pack by Furcloud called Innerbloom - really nice sound called Radiance. Let’s deconstruct this sound and go through all its elements. First let’s engage the A Oscillator,...

How to Make a Reese Bass (Long Deep Bass) in Serum

Sound Design

Hi guys! In this tutorial you’re going to see how to make a pretty basic bass sound for deep house productions or also for techno and electronic music productions. It’s a long bass and it has a lot of power - and it’s also very easy to make for example with Serum. Let’s check out how it sounds: It’s this wam and long thing you want to put in the back - if you’re not looking for a rhythmic bass. Let’s make this patch from scratch! We can take the default wave from Oscillator A. We definitely need a...

How to Make an FM Bass like Kasper Koman in Serum (Lost & Found, Anjunadeep Style)

Sound Design

Hi! I’m Francois. If you’ve been following me for a while you might know that I enjoy learning about sound design by reverse engineering tracks from artists that I like.  Casper Koman is an artist I really like. I listen to a lot of his music and I like his style which is sort of spherical, but also very intelligent and groovy. He’s paying a lot of attention to details and it’s also great to listen to from a producer’s perspective. It was quite a challenge to sit down and remake his work as there are many layers to...

10 Sound Design Tips: Xfer Serum

Sound Design

1. Supersaw wavetables To make your Serum supersaws even fuller, try recording a supersaw (if you can, try an analog sounding synth) and importing it into Serum’s oscillator. Now you can use an LFO to move between frames of the wavetable. Now the oscillator sounds like a supersaw even if you’re using just one voice. If you increase the unison and detune now, the sound all of the sudden becomes huge. Doing this along with the “Unison stack” option in the Global tab can give you really fat supersaws. 2. Unison stack Did you know that you can use more than...

10 Sound Design Tips: Arturia Mini V3

Sound Design

1. Unison VS Detune The Mini V3 allows for two ways of creating a supersaw: One is available only in the Monophonic mode and is accessed by the Unison switch at the top. Depending on how big the “Poly” value is at the bottom of the screen, the synth will generate a supersaw that consists of that many voices. You can then decide how much you want the voices to be detuned by using the “Voice Detune” knob. This technique works for huge bass or lead sounds, but won’t give you access to polyphony. To design a polyphonic supersaw you...

How To Use The ADSR Envelope

Sound Design

Understanding the ADSR envelope (shape): We are shaping our sound with attack, decay, sustain and release parameters. Attack-Time:This is the time we are taking from 0 to max. amplitude as soon as the key is pressed.Decay-Time:Follows directly after the attack time. Its the time the amplitude takes to go from maximum level to sustain level.Sustain-Level:This is the Level of amplitude we are keeping as long as the key is pressed.Release-Time:Starts as soon as key is released. Amplitude goes from sustain level to 0 - the release time sets how long this will take. So, Attack, Decay and Release are time parameters. Sustain...
