Remake: How to sound like "Odesza" (using Ableton Live and Massive)

Odesza Style Ableton

Several people asked us to do a remake for the style of „Odesza“. So we listened to a couple of their tracks and remixes (like: Sia - Big Girls Cry (ODESZA Remix), Hayden James - Something About You (ODESZA Remix), ZHU - Faded (ODESZA Remix), Slow Magic - Waited 4 U (ODESZA Remix) and ODESZA - Say My Name (feat. Zyra)) and tried to identify the key characteristics, elements and styles of their sound. Then we decided to rebuild their remix for Pretty Lights - Lost and Found (ODESZA Remix) using Ableton Live 9 and NI Massive Vst.

Its not the easiest kind of remake, as there’s quite some layering of the sounds going on as well as some partly rather complex sidechain constructions. We’re walking you through the remake process in our 40 minute tutorial below. If you wan’t to follow along with your own Ableton, be sure to have NI Massive installed and Ableton Live 9 Suite including the packs „Orchestral Strings“ and „Grand Piano“. You could also use other string- and piano libraries. Additionally, we’re offering our remake template with different MIDIs and melodies here through this website. Hopefully you’re going to enjoy the tutorial:
