1. TDR Nova

TDR Nova is a dynamic equalizer - which can adapt to your track unlike any regular EQ. You can set each band to react to the amplitude - so your frequencies are limited and boosted automatically, based on the sound itself.

“A user friendly WYSIWYG drag and drop display paired with a classic “knob” interface gives quick and smooth access to the various parameters driving NOVA’s powerful processing capabilities. With its four dynamic EQ bands and additional high-pass and low-pass filter sections, NOVA can meet the most exotic demand. Intuitive equal loudness functions help finding the optimal setting without getting distracted by loudness differences.”

2. Eareckon FR-EQUA 87

The Eareckon is an EQ with an analog engine. It’s super minimalistic - a single band with a Q and Gain control. You can use it for simple EQ adjustments and if you want to give your tracks an analog touch.

3. Ignite Amps PTeq-X

Time for a Pultec-style EQ. The PTeq-X emulates 3 famous vintage passive equalizers. It’s got all the characteristics of original hardware as well as modern improvements.

“Every single component on the signal path of the real analog circuit has been taken into account and modeled in the best possible way to match the original sound, keeping an eye on CPU performance and real-time playability at the same time.”

4. Bee-Happy 550

The Bee-Happy is an emulation of the famous API 550b vintage equalizer.

Features: 4 bands EQ, Tube distortion, Soft clip.

5. Blindfold EQ

This free plugin from Audiothing is a tool you can use to train your ears. There are no frequency displays - you are supposed to trust what you hear. The effect was inspired by the following quote:

“If I were King of the Universe, consoles would have no indication of frequency near the EQ knobs, because when you show the frequency, then most people EQ by eye. […] But seriously, you should have no idea of what frequency you are boosting or cutting. It doesn’t matter what number is. It matters how it sounds and how it feels. That’s it!” - Matt Wallace (from the book Recording Unhinged by Sylvia Massy)

6. Blue Cat’s Triple EQ

It’s a 3-band EQ. The curves are very flexible with gain and bandwidth. There’s a dual channels version - you can edit left and right channels separately or mid/side. A nice feature is the ease of use - its three filters are linked so you can edit all parameters with a single mouse click.

7. Plugin Alliance SPL Free Ranger

It’s a 4-band equalizer: 16 kHz for brilliance, 1.8 kHz for leads and guitars or harshness, 150 Hz for warmth, as well as 40 Hz for sub thump. It’s got a great analog-like sound. It also allows easy comparison between different EQ settings and automation during a song.

8. lkjb Luftikus

It’s a hardware-modeled EQ with 10, 40, 160 and 640 Hz bands. It has special modes for mastering and analog sound, as well as a handy “Keep-gain” function to avoid drastic overall gain changes when EQing.

9. Voxengo Overtone GEQ

It’s a 7-band equalizer which also allows for harmonic enhancement (coloration). You can use it to quickly apply EQ shapes and add a bit of harmonic richness at the same time.

10. TDR Slick EQ

The Slick EQ is split into three bands - lows, mids and highs. Similarly to Voxengo, you can use its output stage to add 4 different types of saturation. In this way you can slightly color your sounds, rather than obvious distortion. It also has an auto-gain option for volume compensation when making cuts or boosts. Another cool function are its four distinct EQ models: “American”, “British”, “German” and “Soviet”.
